London, ON - The Western Mustangs sport community came together to celebrate excellence, legacy, and achievement at the
85th Mustangs Awards Celebration, held on
Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at Alumni Hall. Building on more than 100 years of tradition, the evening honoured the remarkable accomplishments of Mustangs student-athletes, coaches, and teams from the 2025-26 season.
With over 800 student-athletes, staff, alumni, and supporters in attendance, the celebration featured a reception, recognition of graduating student-athletes, and the presentation of major awards and team MVPs. The evening highlighted not only athletic excellence, but also the leadership, academic achievement, and community impact that define the Western Mustangs experience.
Karen Danylchuk Award
The prestigious
Karen Danylchuk Award is presented to a female senior student-athlete who exemplifies excellence in athletics, academics, and university life.
Congratulations to this year's 2025-26 recipient:
Hallee Knelsen (Cross Country/Track & Field, School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies).
Knelsen's career has been defined by consistency, leadership, and high-level performance, balancing success in competition with strong academic achievement and meaningful contributions to the Mustangs community.
G. Howard Ferguson Award

The
G. Howard Ferguson Award, one of the most historic awards for the Western Mustangs, recognizes a male graduating student-athlete who has achieved outstanding success across athletics, academics, and campus life.
Congratulations to this year's 2025-26 recipient:
Aaron Thompson (Track & Field, Medicine).
Thompson's impact extends beyond competition, demonstrating excellence in both performance, leadership and community throughout his career.
Mustangs Rookie of the Year Awards
Introduced in 2025 to the Mustangs awards line-up, the
Mustangs Rookie of the Year Awards recognize an outstanding female and outstanding male rookie student-athlete.
Nominees for the 2025-26 Female Rookie of the Year Award include:
- Sydney Cowan (Basketball, Kinesiology)
- Sydney Hardeman (Swimming, Kinesiology)
- Judy Li (Fencing, Health Sciences)

F.W.P. Jones Trophy
The
F.W.P. Jones Trophy is presented to the Mustangs female student-athlete who has made the most outstanding contribution to intercollegiate athletics during their career.

- Jonelle Clarke (Wrestling, School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies)
- Sophie Coutts (Cross Country/Track & Field, Med Sci/Ivey)

Coutts' accomplishments across Cross Country and Track & Field, combined with her leadership and academic excellence, solidify her as a deserving winner of this award.
Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy
The
Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Mustangs male student-athlete who has made the most outstanding contribution to intercollegiate athletics during their career.

Mustangs Athlete of the Year Awards recognize the top male and female performers who achieved outstanding success at the provincial and/or national levels in the season.

Clarke's dominance in wrestling and Mackay's dual-sport excellence highlight the depth of talent within Mustangs Sports & Recreation and the continued strength of Western on the national stage.
Mustangs Purple Blankets
The evening also recognized recipients of the
Mustangs Purple Blanket, which are awarded based on both academic and athletic achievements, usually in a Western University student athlete's graduating year. Recipients must have participated in varsity sport for a minimum of three years and must have earned a minimum of three first colours.
