Matt Spencer enters his first year as an assistant basketball coach with the Mustangs after spending 10 seasons as an assistant at Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional High School in his hometown of Antigonish, NS. He also served as head coach for the Antigonish U17 Royals in the summer of 2007, leading the squad to a silver medal performance at the prestigious Montreal International Basketball Festival. Under head coach Gail MacDougall, Spencer helped Dr. J.H. Gillis earn 8 berths at the NSSAF Division 1 Provincial Championships, highlighted by a silver medal finish in 2001.

As a student-athlete, Spencer was a two-time CIAU Academic All-Canadian cross country runner at St. Francis Xavier University (1997-2001).  After completing his undergraduate studies (B.Sc. in Human Kinetics) at StFX, he earned a M.Sc. in Kinesiology from the University of Saskatchewan before spending two years as an instructor back at StFX.

Spencer began his doctoral studies in Kinesiology under the supervision of Dr. Donald H. Paterson in September, 2007.  In the fall of 2008, Spencer joined the London Board of Basketball Officials.  In his role at Western, Matt will be helping with the day-to-day operations of the team.  His responsibilities will encompass player development, practice delivery, and game preparation.  Matt will also offer academic guidance and support to the team’s student-athletes.
