Oct. 24: Western 1 Guelph 1 / Oct. 25: York 2 Western 1
LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs advance to the playoffs after placing fifth in the OUA West Division - but they will play the post-season out on the road.
Goalkeeper Marissa Chinn was brilliant in the Western Mustangs final regular season game on Oct. 25, trying to give Western a home playoff game. But the Mustangs could not hold the first-place York Lions at bay, falling 2-1.
Chinn (Toronto) made several great runs off her line throughout the game to challenge York shooters - including OUA goal-scoring leader Ami Otaki (Japan) - and finished the game with seven saves.
One save with 20 mnutes left in the opening half came off Otaki who was wide open and stoned by the Mustangs goaltender.
Alicia Donaldson (Mississauga, Ont.) scored York's first goal, catching Chinn off her line and placing a perfectly kicked ball just over Chinn's head from 40 yards out.
Erin Grand (Toronto) tied the game later in the half, using her head to score Western's only goal on the day after some great play deep in the Lions zone. Donaldson tried to save the ball from going over the line but the pursuit from Robyn Sudeyko gave the Lions midfielder nowhere to turn.
But Donaldson would score again for York, converting on a beautiful two-on-one late int eh game with outside midfielder Nicole Markowitz (Toronto).
Ginger Basnett (Prince George, B.C.) scored Western's only goal in the Oct. 24 1-1 tie with Guelph.
Western finishes their regular season 6-7-1 and travels to play at McMaster on Oct. 28 in the OUA quarter-final at 2 p.m. Western lost 3-2 to McMaster in their last meeting but defeated them 5-0 two weeks earlier.
