Guiffre and Lam set off the fourth consecutive win for Western

Oct. 31: Western 12 York 1

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs improved their record with their fourth win of the season in a 12-1 over the York Lions on Oct. 31 at Thames Hall.

While the oppositional team may have put in their best effort, the Mustangs were unbeatable.

Jenn Lam (Toronto) won the first set within minutes. Lam’s (21-6, 21-5) victory was shortly followed with another win by Martin Giuffre (Calgary, Alta.), who also defeated his opponent in straight sets (21-8, 21-14). The highly, experienced Mustangs completely caught the oppositional team offguard. As Mustangs continued to win game after game, the winning streak began to attract more spectators.

The sets continued in favour of the Mustangs, as Alex Bruce (Toronto),Peter Butler (Toronto), Matt Woo (Richmond Hill, Ont.), and Jane Bai (London, Ont.) dominated in the singles sets.

Even though the result was unanimously in favour of Western, the tension was high during the last line up.

Although the Mustangs ended up losing their last set in mixed doubles to the Lions, head coach Rob Fowler was unfazed. Fowler said he supports his team and believes that this experience will help “build on the momentum gained and [provide] valuable experience for some of the rookies.”

The next match will be played at the Atlhouse College Gym against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 11 a.m. on Nov. 8.
