Giuffre, Lam lead Mustangs to dominant win over Rams

Western opens season with 12-1 victory over Ryerson

LONDON, Ont. -- The four-time defending OUA champion Western Mustangs have picked up right where they left off. The team opened the 2009 season with a convincing 12-1 victory on the road against the Ryerson Rams.

Five-time MVP Jennifer Lam led the charge, winning a pair of matches. Lam defeated Ryerson's Clare Cheung in straight sets (21-10, 21-7), and teamed up with Laura Vandervet to take the premier women's doubles match over the Rams (21-7, 21-6).

Martin Giuffre, meanwhile, also won a pair of matches. The reigning Under-19 Canadian National Boy's Singles, Boy's Doubles and Mixed Doubles champion cruised to a win over Ryerson's Jason Wan (21-5, 21-10). He also teamed with Vandervet to win a mixed doubles event in straight sets (21-18, 21-18).

"Martin looks like he is going to be the player to beat this year," said Western head coach Rob Fowler.

"Alex Bruce also looked dominant in her wins, showing why she has been selected to represent Canada at the Pan Am's in Mexico at the end of the month," Fowler said.

Bruce teamed with Staci Miao in a women's doubles match, and partnered with Peter Butler for a mixed doubles win.
