TORONTO - Andy Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) led the Western Mustangs with 23 points and 11 rebounds, but a poor second half - especially the fourth quarter - cost Western the game, losing 84-68 to the Toronto Varsity Blues Nov. 28.
After Toronto controlled the game early - with Wedemire in foul trouble early - in what was a first-half, see-saw battle. Western led 41-39 at the half.
But Toronto opened up on a great run to start the third quarter, building a Blues lead to 63-55 after three quarters for the hosts, with Western struggling to score from three-point range. Toronto hit back-to-back threes to end the third frame.
In the fourth, Toronto stretched the lead to 12 points early. A David Harder (Copenhagen, Denmark) three after Wedemire rebound brought Western back to a 69-62 deficit with seven minutes left.
But after a Toronto timeout to settle things down, the Blues re-established a 13-point lead at 82-66 and they held on for the win.
Toronto seemed to make every shot, while the Mustangs were not getting the same luck.
Guard Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) finished with 10 points and four assists, while Garrett Olexiuk(Burlington, Ont.) had 12 points and eight rebounds.
The previous night, the Mustangs men's basketball team played tough defence down the stretch to earn an 80-69 win over the Ryerson Rams. Western held a four-point lead with just over two minutes left after trailing 41-40 at the half.
Western finishes the 2009, interlock portion of the season with a 5-3 record.
