LONDON, Ont - The Western Mustangs rebounded from a 2-0 loss to Brock a day earlier to smash the McMaster Marauders 5-0 at TD Waterhouse Stadium on Sept. 27.
Erin Grand (Toronto) scored a pair of goals for Western, including the game-winning goal, while Jenna Schroeder (Sudbury, Ont.), Steph Pizzitelli (Aurora, Ont.) and Brenna McConnell (Oshawa, Ont.) added singles.
Grand's first goal came off a corner kick earned after strong wing play by Chantal Blais (Toronto) created the set-piece opportunity. A curling corner kick from Robyn Sudeyko (Calgary, Alta.) found Grand's head, and then the back of the McMaster net on a beautiful play, making it 1-0 Western just 10 minutes in.
Three minutes later, Schroeder scored after beating goaltender Michelle Spadafora to a loose ball, tipping it to the goalkeeper's right and then hitting it into an empty net.
Sweeper Lauren Duff (London, Ont.) set up the play, threading the ball through the McMaster defense which was trying to trap Western offside.
Freshman forward McConnell scored late in the first half to give Western the 3-0 lead, capping off impressive ball movement up the field. Her goal came after she beat Spadafora to an innocent looking centring pass, catching the Marauders defence and goalkeeper flat-footed.
Marissa Chinn (Stouffville, Ont.), who made 10 saves to earn the clean sheet, played a strong first half, sliding out to breakup a two-on-one started by striker Samantha Batten. Chinn slid to take the ball away from Batten and then regained her balance to be in perfect position for the rebound shot from midfielder and McMaster teammate Hayley Marler.
In the second half, McMaster and Western battled hard through midfield, but Western added the only two goals.
Chinn watched Batten's penalty shot attempt sail wide 10 minutes into the second half, and then Steph Pizzitelli (Aurora, Ont.) scored with about 15 minutes left to make it 4-0. Grand added her second in the dying minutes, volleying the ball off a corner kick on a tight angle from the right post.
A day earlier, Western lost 2-0 to the Brock Badgers at the Hellenic Club. Ali Gartley and Cassandre Van Bakel scored for Brock.
