LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs defeated the York Lions 6-1 in OUA women's tennis action on Sept. 25 and lost a heart-breaker to Montreal on Sept. 26 at the UWO Tennis Centre.
It was Western's first win over York under coach Mike Richards, and the team played admirably, losing just the No. 1 seed match in singles play.
Western won all three doubles points - Paige Robinson (London, Ont.) and Emma Lecavalier (Mesa, Arizona) at No. 1, Carolynna Gabriel (Toronto) and Chantal Forristal (Toronto) at No. 2, and Alex Georgakopoulos (London, Ont.) and Meaghan Gutelius (Cambridge, Ont.) at No. 3 all won their matches.
In singles play, Robinson lost at No. 1, but all other seeds won in straight sets including: Forristal at No. 2, Lecavalier at No. 3, Georgakopoulos at No. 4, Gabriel at No. 5 and Diana Pogorski (Toronto) at No. 6.
On Sept. 26, Western won the doubles point winning all three matches against Montreal, with the same pairings from a day earlier, but lost the singles points 4-2, to be outscored 4-3 on the day.
The No. 5 match between Gabriel and Andrean Lussier came down to a tiebreaker as the deciding point with players from both teams around the court watching. Lecavalier and Pogorski both won their singles points, Robinson, Forristal, Georgakopoulos and Gabriel lost their singles points.
Western travels to play their final regular season match at UOIT on Oct. 10 before the OUA championships a week later, also at UOIT, in Oshawa, Ont., Oct. 17-18.
In men's action, Western (3-3) defeated Montreal 4-3 on Sept. 26 and shutout UOIT 7-0 on Sept. 25. They next play at York on Oct. 3 with OUA Champoinships Oct. 17-18 at UOIT.
