LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team showed no signs of tired legs having played two games on back to back days. They disposed of the York Lions in straight sets 25-19, 25-19 and 25-23. The Mustangs are now 10-4 in the OUA standings, in a tie with the Guelph Gryphons for third place.
Elaine Screaton (Calgary) led the attack for the Mustangs with 11 kills, 11 digs, and as well as two aces. Jenna Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.) was player of the game as she facilitated the Western attack with 34 assists and added 12 digs.
The Mustangs came out aggressive, forcing York into early mistakes. Western held the early lead with York pulling back into it to tie the first set at 19-19. Lowrie called a timeout and the Mustangs regrouped and tightened up their play going on a six point streak to take the first set 25-19.
The momentum from the run at the end of the first set was used to establish an early lead in the second set. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 11-3 until York was forced to call a time out. The Lions battled back late in the set but another time out call by Lowrie settled the Mustangs down and they closed out the set 25-19.
Western showed no signs of slowing down and continued to impose their will on York in the third set. A York mishit at the end of a long rally seemed to deflate the Lions as Western’s lead was extended to 12-5. The Lions did not want to get swept in straight sets and battled hard to bring it back to a tie at 22-22. The home crowd rallied behind the Mustangs as they finished off the Lions 25-23.
After the successful weekend, the Mustangs aim to continue their three-game winning streak at home against the Windsor Lancers on Fri. Jan 29 at 8 p.m. Admission to Alumni Hall is free for students with their Student ID cards.
