Losing streak snapped as Mustangs defeat Warriors

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs snapped their two-game losing streak with a 76-60 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Jan. 27 in Alumni Hall.

The first quarter started strong for the Mustangs women as they took an early 24-14 lead. The second quarter proved to be to be more of challenge for the Western defence as the Warriors dominated in their end of the court, outscoring the Mustangs 20-11. The Mustangs were able to hold onto the lead 35-34 with the help of rookie Beckie Williams (London, Ont.) who led the team at the half with seven points and four rebounds.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs' offence improved as they outscored the Warriors 20-10, extending their lead to 54-44. Western battled through the fourth quarter and earned a final 76-60 victory over the seventh-place Warriors.

Western head coach Stephan Barrie attributed the teams improved performance in the second half to focus and performing to their potential.

“In the first half, they [the Warriors] were out working us and we were making poor decisions basketball wise,” Barrie said. “The third quarter we played to our potential as a team and there was a difference in the game”.

Katelyn Leddy (London, Ont.) led the team with 17 points and five rebounds followed by Amanda Anderson  (Chatham, Ont.) who netted 15 points and five assists. Williams contributed 13 points, four assists, and five steals.

Next, the Mustangs will travel to Wilfrid Laurier on Jan. 30 to take on the sixth place Golden Hawks at 1 p.m.
