LONDON, Ont., - The Western Mustangs defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-0 at Alumni Hall on Jan. 29.
Game-day jerseys were raffled off to raise money for The Canadian Red Cross to help Haiti. The individually signed jerseys raised $800 in addition to ticket and silent auction sales. The auction item was a fully signed Calgary Flames jersey which raised $310 alone for Haiti relief.
All in final proceeds from the entire day raised over $2,000.
This game was particularly special as it was the game senior members of the women’s volleyball team will play at home. Although, “we went in relaxed,” said head coach Dean Lowrie, “you never know where emotions will be with the graduates.”
However, once they settled in the Mustangs played their hearts out.
“Windsor is a young team, with less experience,” said Lowrie. “We knew we would be successful.”
The Mustangs proved their coach was right through all three sets.
Off to a blazing start, Western won the first and second sets with an outstanding 13-point difference ending both matches at 25-12.
In the final set, the Lancers fought back hard taking the seizing the first part of the set at 8-5. This lead, again was short as the Mustangs came back with a vengeance winning the final set with a score of 25-19.
Jenna Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.), a graduating student, took home the player of the game award in the first of two games in the Mustangs final homestand of the regular season. All players showed incredible talent tonight and were able to come through even with high emotions.
Other graduating seniors include Sarah Lowry(Calgary), Nicole Smyrnios (London, Ont.), Jacqueline Robinson (Vancouver) and Sara Farrell (London, Ont.)
