LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's basketball team has gotten off to a hot start to the season winning their first four games. They are currently ranked fourth in the nation.
The Mustangs have been efficient on the offensive side of the ball as they currently lead the OUA scoring 80 points per game. They are shooting 55% as a team on the season and 44% from three-point range.
Their defence has been just as stingy as they are third in the OUA allowing under 48 points per game and holding teams under 28% shooting from the field.
Matteke Hutzler leads the Mustangs averaging 14.5 points per game, with Jenny Vaughan contributing 13.5 points with four assists per game.
The Mustangs will face a tough test this weekend as they host top teams from the OUA East, the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees. Both are 3-1 on the season with each team having lost to the 4-0 Laurier Golden Hawks.
Carleton is battling with some injuries right now but have still been nearly as good as the Mustangs on defence, allowing just 50 points per game. Ottawa features one of the hottest players in the OUA right now in Hannah Sunley-Paisley, who is averaging 20 points per game with 13 rebounds through her first four games.
Western will host Carleton on Friday night at 6 p.m. and Ottawa at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening. Following the game on Saturday there will be a tribute to Doug Hayes before the men's game begins. Both games will be at Alumni Hall and tickets are available online or at the door. Student admission is free with their Student ID card.
