LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's basketball team shut the door on Ottawa's offence allowing only eight second-half points to win 58-35 on Friday night at Doug Hayes Tribute Night in Alumni Hall.
The Mustangs were down 27-20 at half before going on a 17-0 run to start the half and outscored the Gee-Gees 23-3 in the third quarter and 15-5 in the fourth.
Jacklyn Selfe and Matteke Hutzler led the Mustangs with 12 points each. Jenny Vaughan had seven points, six assists and three steals.
Western improves to 5-1 on the season. The Mustangs will be on the road next weekend as they head to Kingston to take on RMC on Friday, Nov. 26 and Queen's on Nov. 27.
The Mustangs and Gee-Gees traded baskets in the first quarter with neither team shooting the ball particularly well. At the end of the first the score was tied at 12.
Western continued to struggle shooting from the field and the Gee-Gees took advantage of the Mustangs' offensive drought to build a lead going into halftime. After Ottawa held the ball for a final shot, hitting the three-point shot, they held a 27-20 lead at half.
It was all Mustangs in the second half as they went on a 17-0 run to start the third quarter and held the Gee-Gees off the board for over six minutes. Ottawa's only points in the quarter would come on a three-point attempt.
The Mustangs stifling defence would continue to frustrate Ottawa in the fourth as they outscored Ottawa 15-5 and held the Gee-Gee's to 2 of 26 shooting in the second half.
