Feb. 12: OUA announces curling all-stars, major award winners

HAMILTON, Ont. – Western Mustangs head curling coach Rory Munro earned coach-of-the-year honours as part of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announcement of the 2010 curling major award winners and all-stars.

Munro has been named OUA coach of the year for the second straight season. Under his guidance both Western men’s and women’s teams earned OUA championships berths, with the men completing a perfect 8-0 season. Both teams are the defending OUA champions.

Four of Munro’s players have been named 2010 OUA all-stars, including men’s first-team vice Micky Lizmore (London, Ont.) and second Joey Lanthier (Lively, Ont.).

Lizmore, who represented Ontario in the 2007 Canadian junior men's curling championship, has shot 75 percent in play leading up to the OUA championship. He is a three-time all-star.

Lanthier had a very successful rookie campaign on the OUA circuit, shooting 76 percent. He is a four-time Northern Ontario junior provincial finalist.

Western skip Evan Lilly (Sudbury, Ont.) headlines the men’s second-team all-stars. Lilly is also a four-time Northern Ontario junior men's finalist, shooting 77 percent in his first OUA season as a skip. He was an all-Canadian second at last year's Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) – Canadian Curling Association (CCA) championships in Montreal.

Western's vice Megan Balsdon (Toronto) was named as an OUA first-team all-star. Earlier this season, Balsdon competed in the Scotties Ontario women’s finals. She represented Ontario at the Canadian junior women’s championships in 2001. McDermott is a two-time all-star.
