WATERLOO, Ont. – Graduating Western Mustangs point guard Amanda Anderson (Dover Centre, Ont.) led Team West with 13 points as her squad won the 2010 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women’s basketball all-star game 68-63 at the Wilfrid Laurier University Athletic Complex on Saturday night May 1.

The OUA player of the year, Anderson scored a long-range two-pointer in the late stages of the game to seal the win for the West. She scored three 3-pointers en route to team most valuable player honours. 

She also contributed four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

The all-star game was played as part of the 2010 Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) girl’s under 16 Ontario Cup.

Buckets were hard to come by for both teams in the early going as players got used to their new teammates. Carleton head coach Taffe Charles of the East and Windsor counterpart Chantal Vallée of the West rotated their benches frequently to give all of their players an opportunity. They attempted to put as many student-athletes from the same school on the court at the same time to breed familiarity amongst the players. 

East trailed by as much as 13 points in the third quarter before mounting a comeback, tying the score at 51 before West took a 53-51 advantage in the dying seconds of the quarter, setting up a dramatic fourth. East went ahead 61-60 before West took the lead for good. West held a 41-32 advantage at halftime after building a 20-15 lead after one quarter.

Nicki Schutz (Toronto) of the Toronto Varsity Blues was arguably the game’s most dominant player, scoring a game-high 18 points while contributing five rebounds. She was named most valuable player for the East. All-star teammate Katie Guthrie (Kingston, Ont.) of the Queen’s Gaels contributed 10 points and six boards.

OUA and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rookie of the year Jessica Clemençon (St. Rambert, France) of the Windsor Lancers scored a team-high 16 points for the West. Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) of the hometown Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, the West defensive player of the year, scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. A total of 21 players contributed points in the game.

Both rosters consisted of 2009-10 OUA all-stars, major award winners and members of all-rookie teams. 

East won last year’s all-star game 77-64.

Anderson will graduate this year and now seeks a professional contract overseas.
