The Western Mustangs women's softball team won both ends of their double-header against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sept. 11 (5-2 and 10-3) and the Carleton Ravens on Sept. 12 (14-0 and 20-0).
The second game against Ottawa and both wins over Carleton were run-rule victories (one team leading by seven or more runs after 5 innings).
The Mustangs pounded out 35 hits against Carleton and 20 against Ottawa.
Senior catcher Julianne Proniuk of Brampton, Ont., recorded six hits, including three triples and six RBI. Graduate student Steph Reid of Scarborough, Ont., connected with five hits and seven RBI; junior Lindsey Martin of London recorded five hits including a homerun; Vanessa Homiak of Orangeville, Ont., had five hits and five RBI; and freshman AJ Anstett of Cargill, Ont., also had five hits and three RBI.
Sophomore Mel Stevenson of Brampton, Ont., and junior Shea Black of Toronto got the wins over Ottawa, while Danielle Beckett of Embro, Ont., and freshman Kara Stirling of London earmed the victories over Carleton.
Five alumni players and one coach dating back to the 2002 Mustang team returned to London Friday, Sept 10 for the First Annual Alumni game.
Several brought along their children. Unfortunately, four others had to change plans at the last minute so the Alumni joined a split-squad game with the current Mustangs which was won by the White squad, 4-1.
The Alumni showed they can still play and a good time was had by all. Plans are underway to repeat this game in 2011.
Next action for the Mustangs is on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Windsor at 5 p.m. The Mustangs return home Saturday, Sept. 18 to host Toronto at 2 p.m. and then host Guelph on Sunday, Sept. 19 at noon. Both are double-headers at London's Stronach Park.
