WINDSOR, Ont. - The Western Mustangs won both games in their softball rivalry with Windsor on Wednesday, Sept. 15, winning 8-1 and 3-0 and are now unbeaten in six games.
Although shorthanded due to several class conflicts, a determined Mustang squad had several players in unfamiliar positions but executed well taking both ends of the doubleheader (8-1 in a run rule-shorted game and 3-0).
Mel Stevenson of Brampton, Ont., went the distance in the circle in Game 1 recording 10 strikeouts while scattering four hits. The lone Windsor run was unearned.
In Game 2, Shea Black of Toronto gave up only three hits in the complete-game shutout victory.
At the plate, Lindsey Martin of London, Ont., Meg Hewins of Burlington, Ont., and freshman Kara Stirling of London, Ont., were all 4-for-7. Martin recorded two triples and scored three times. Dani Abdilla of Brampton, Ont., went 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring twice. Julianne Proniuk of Brampton, Ont., had two RBI and Tricia MacKay of Embro, Ont., hit a homerun.
Western’s record improves to 6-0 and Windsor falls to 3-3.
Next action for the Mustangs is at home at Stronach Park on Saturday Sept. 18 against Toronto (2 pm start) and Sunday Sept. 19 against Guelph (noon start). Both schools were playoffs teams in 2009 with Guelph finishing third among the 12 Ontario schools.
