KINGSTON, Ont - The Western Mustangs spoiled the Queen's Gaels unofficial homecoming with a 31-15 win in a battle of two Ontario rugby powerhouses on Saturday Sept. 25.
Conor Trainor, who will leave for India to represent Canada at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in men's rugby, led the Mustangs with a two-try, one-convert performance for 12 points.
Rory Tomlinson added two tries, while Nikolai Paukkunen had one. Tom Bridger, who was forced to leave the game, added two converts.
The Mustangs built a 24-10 lead at the half and played solid defence to hold on to win.
"It was a good game, it was a really good performance," said head coach Steve Thomas. "We're looking better each week."
Western's defence was tested when Michael Talbot was carded, yet Western did not surrender a point with a player in the sin-bin.
Thomas noted that Andrew Crow also had an excellent two-way game for the Mustangs.
Western is now 3-0 and hosts Toronto at Homecoming on Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at the UWO rugby fields.
