LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's basketball team started 2011 making some noise in the OUA. The Mustangs beat former No. 1 Windsor on Wednesday and then routed McMaster by 50 points.
With the wins the Mustangs sit in first place in the OUA with a 9-1 record and move up one spot in the national rankings to No. 3.
Despite the strong performance to date and the recent unseating of Windsor as No. 1 in the CIS, head coach Steph Barrie sees room to grow.
“We are a young team and regardless of where we are in the standing, OUA or CIS, we have to keep getting better," said Barrie.
"We have a lot of room to grow still. It’s about getting better whether you're in first or not."
The Mustangs will head out on the road and look to keep getting better as they head to St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers on Wed. Jan. 12 at 6 p.m.
Brock is nipping at the Mustangs' heels with a 7-3 record and is a perfect 4-0 at home in OUA play. They are led by Hillary Woodside averaging over 13 points per game and just under five rebounds per game.
The Mustangs will counter with their league-leading defence and second ranked offence. They have averaged 74 points per game while giving up a stingy 47 per game.
