GUELPH, Ont. - The No. 3 Western Mustangs outscored the Guelph Gryphons 22-12 in the fourth quarter to come back and win 57-52 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Mustangs improve to 11-1 on the season, a game ahead of the Windsor Lancers who they face on Wednesday night in Windsor. The Gryphons fall to 7-5 on the year.
Matteke Hutzler led the Mustangs with 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Jackyln Selfe and Jenny Vaughan each had 13 points in the win.
The Mustangs started out with their usual stingy defence holding the Gryphons to just seven points in the first quarter to lead 15-7. The Gryphons played tough with Western and held a slim 26-25 halftime lead.
With Guelph extending their lead in the third quarter to lead by five 39-35 the Mustangs had to come back with a strong fourth quarter to pick up the win on the road. They held the Gryphons in check as they got their shots to fall, outscoring Guelph 22-12 to win 57-52.
The Mustangs will face Windsor on the road on Jan. 19 at 6 p.m.
