Battle for first place as No. 3 Western heads to No. 2 Windsor

Jan. 19: Western at Windsor, 6 p.m.

LONDON, Ont. - The No. 3 Western Mustangs take their seven-game winning streak on the road to take on the No. 2 Windsor Lancers at 6 p.m. on Wed. Jan. 19. The Lancers will be looking for a measure of revenge after the Mustangs beat them in Alumni Hall 57-54 two weeks ago.

The game will be streamed live at http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/2083/

With both teams battling at the top of the OUA West standings, this game could be decisive in determining the number one seed and who hosts a playoff game. The Mustangs were effective with their defence in the last meeting, shutting down OUA leading scorer Jessica Clemencon. The Mustangs held her to just 12 points, below her season average of 18.8 points per game.

Western has been stifling teams all season with their defensive pressure holding them to just 49.8 points per game. The Mustangs offence has been efficient scoring 73.4 points per game and leading the OUA in field goal percentage at 46.2%.

Coach Steph Barrie knows the importance of this game and how diffiicult a test it will be for the Mustangs.

"This will be a great matchup tomorrow.  Going into their place, facing the defending OUA champions and CIS silver medalists on their floor is going to be a great challenge for us," Barrie said.

"The bottom line is we still have a lot to prove and that is how we approach things.  To play one of the best teams in the country in their gym and see what we are made of is a great opportunity for our young team."

The Mustangs' big three of Matteke Hutzler, Jacklyn Selfe and Jenny Vaughan have led the Mustangs offensively scoring 14.5, 12.1 and 12 points per game respectively. Hutzler and Selfe have been strong on the boards averaging 6.8 and 5.5 rebounds per game, while Vaughan has set the table for the offence with four assists per game.

Windsor is disappointed with their loss two weeks ago and the Lancers' Emily Abbott has even gone as far as to guarantee a win for Windsor.

Western continues their difficult road trip as they head to third-place Laurier on Sat. Jan. 22 for a 1 p.m. tipoff. The Mustangs finish off their home and away series with Laurier at Alumni Hall on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.
