Screaton, Pierce dominant as Western sweeps Windsor

Jan. 28: Western 3 Windsor 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-8)

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs cruised to a 3-0 sweep of the Windsor Lancers Friday night at Alumni Hall. Western won by set scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-8.

The Mustangs improve to 11-3 on the season with the win and in a tie for second place in the OUA West with the Guelph Gryphons. The Lancers fall to 2-12 on the year.

Western had a full team effort in the win with seven players getting a kill. Elaine Screaton led the Mustangs with nine kills, adding nine digs and an ace. Jenny Pierce has seven kills and five digs.

The Mustangs started the first set slow battling with Windsor and held a slim 7-6 advantage. Kelly Frittenberg, Screaton and Sarah Johnston sparked the Mustangs on a 18-5 run as Frittenberg had three aces. Screaton and Johnston both had four kills in the set to win 25-11.

The second set went much like the first as Windsor was able to stay close to the Mustangs to start as Western held a 6-4 and then a 14-9 lead. Screaton had four more kills as the Mustangs extended their lead to 22-13 before ultimately taking the set 25-15.

Looking for the sweep the Mustangs started out on a tear going 8-0 before the technical timeout. It was not until the Mustangs had 11 points that Windsor got on the board. Unforced errors by the Lancers and strong hitting by the Mustangs pushed the lead to 19-5 and then the Mustangs cruised to the 25-8 victory.

The Mustangs will be at home on Sunday, Jan. 30 as they face the Lakehead Thunderwolves at 1 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
