LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs shone on Senior night as they beat the Lakehead Thunderwolves 58-38 on Saturday night.
Matteke Hutzler, the lone Senior on the young Mustangs squad, was honoured after the game for her contributions this year as a graduating athlete. She led the Mustangs with 17 points and 11 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.
Jenny Vaughan had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists. Lacey Knox had nine points and eight rebounds.
The Mustangs finish the regular season with a 19-3 record and have clinched second place in the OUA West. Lakehead falls to 13-9 to end the regular season.
The Mustangs came out strong on defence and forced Lakehead to take tough shots. Lakehead was just 2-of-11 from the field in the first quarter and the Mustangs took advantage with a 21-9 lead.
The second quarter was high on intensity but low on scoring as both teams were very physical on defence. The Mustangs outscored Lakehead 7-5 in the quarter and took a 26-16 lead into halftime. Western limited the Thunderwolves to 5-of-31 shooting for a 16% field goal percentage.
Western continued the defensive pressure in the third quarter holding the Thunderwolves to just seven points in the quarter. The Mustangs struggled as well on offence scoring just 11 points but extended their lead to 37-23.
The Mustangs will play in the OUA West semi-final next weekend at the OUA West Final Four in Windsor. The time and team they will face is still to be determined.
