LONDON, Ont. -
Rebecca Moss and
Beckie Williams each drained four three-pointers as the Western Mustangs defeated the Guelph Gryphons 82-60 on Feb.5 at Alumni Hall. This game was part of the annual Shoot for a Cure cancer fundraiser in support of OneRun.
“Some days you just feel it,” said Moss, on her excellence at the three-point line. “I’ve been struggling lately, and it was good to break out of that slump.”
The first quarter was a display of the Mustang’s shooting ability. Moss went two-for-two at the three-point line, contributing an initial eight points.
Jenny Vaughan aided in Western’s early lead with three assists. The Mustangs defensive pressure, led by
Lacey Knox’s four defensive rebounds, forced the Gryphon’s offense to struggle as Guelph made seven of their 30 scoring attempts.
In the second quarter, Vaughan continued to set up key offensive scoring opportunities for the top scorer of the quarter Williams, who had 13 points, including three three-pointers, one as the first-half buzzer went off. Moss’ reign at the three-point line extended as she netted another, adding to her three-point line perfection. Mustang defense held the Gryphons to a mere eight points in the second quarter. Western led 38-22 at half.
Moss and Williams each added another two long threes, but late in the third Moss missed her first of the game. Moss’ defensive effort was strong as she added three key defensive rebounds leading the Mustangs with seven rebounds at the end of the quarter. The Gryphons were able to capitalize on offensive opportunities outscoring the Mustangs 22-18, but after three quarters of play, the Mustangs still held the lead 56-44.
In the fourth the Mustangs got into foul trouble as
Matteke Hutzler fouled out of the game with just over five minutes remaining. Amidst a late Gryphon drive, Vaughan drained a three extending the Mustang lead to 70-55 with less that three minutes on the clock. Vaughan, Williams, and Moss continued to light up the scoreboard, while Knox had key offensive and defensive rebounds. Western was successful on 11 of their 13 fourth-quarter foul line attempts, claiming the 82-60 victory.
Next, the Mustangs will travel to McMaster on Feb. 9 to take on the Marauders.
