The Western Mustangs women’s soccer team were looking to get back on the right track Saturday afternoon against Laurier following a 1-0 shut out loss to UOIT last weekend. Excellent goaltending combined with a late goal from Sabrina DeNard to give the Mustangs the 1-0 win.
After an uneventful first half the Golden Hawks turned things up in the second portion of the game, firing five shots at Mustang goaltender Keltie Brigham who was able to turn them all away, finishing the day with seven saves. DeNard’s goal in the 84th minute was the third on the season for the first-year defender.
The win puts Western in sole possession of second place in the OUA West division with an 8-3-2 record. If the playoffs started today the Mustangs would receive a bye through the first round and move immediately into the OUA West final four.
Western has three games remaining in the regular season; road games against the Waterloo Warriors and Brock Badgers, and a home tilt against the McMaster Marauders. The Marauders are currently in third place in the OUA West, only three points behind Western and with a game in hand.
Next up for the Mustangs is the team's second last road game of the season as they take on Waterloo. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
