Mustangs in solid playoff contention with 4-1 win over Waterloo

Despite a slow start to today's game, the Western Mustangs women's soccer team prevailed past the Waterloo Warriors in a 4-1 victory on the road and move to a 9-3-2 record for the season. This feat follows a 1-0 shut out against the Laurier Golden Hawks yesterday afternoon and closes out an impressive weekend both at TD Waterhouse and on the road.

The first half was largely in Western’s end but the Warriors were unable to turn many chances into potential scoring opportunities. At 17 minutes, Warrior Adrienne Goldsworthy found the Mustangs’ net, passing keeper Tori Edgar for the first goal of the game.

Western’s Jen Spinozzi responded after both teams battled for possession thereafter and earned the Mustangs' first goal.  Teammate Adrianna Guiffre followed up with two goals within six minutes – one late in the first half and the other to open the second – and shifted the momentum in the Mustangs' favour.

Lauren Winquist made a final push and beat Warrior keeper Kala Studens for her ninth goal of the season in ten starts, sitting seventh-best in the OUA.

Despite the four goals, Warrior goaltender Studens made eight key saves in the second and maintained an exciting half that took place largely in Waterloo territory.

The win secures Western in second place within the OUA West division. Western is hopeful for a bye to the OUA final four because of this top standing, but the playoff rankings are still yet to be determined for another few games.

The Mustangs have two games remaining in the regular season; a road game versus the Brock Badgers, and a final home tilt against the McMaster Marauders. The Marauders are currently in third place in the OUA West, only three points behind Western and with a game in hand.

Next up the Mustangs travel to St. Catharines to take on Brock Badgers. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m on October 20. Catch the ‘Stangs next at home on October 21 at 1:00pm as they make their final push for the postseason.
