Mustangs Enter Ontario Tourney with 22-0 Regular Season Record

The Mustangs (22-0) finished the regular season schedule with doubleheader victories over Queen's (9-11) and York (14-8) and will enter the Provincial Tournament Oct 19-21 as the number 1 seed.  On Saturday in game 1 vs Queen's Western had 17 hits and won 19-1.  Kara Stirling (London; 8-0) pitched a 3 hitter and also contributed 4 hits, 4 RBI, and scored 3 times.  AJ Anstett (Cargill) & Shannon Davidison (Whitby) hit homeruns in the game.  Anstett, Leah Margolis (Vancouver), Victoria Ely (Niagara-on-the-Lake), and Jenn Wakefield (St Thomas) each picked up 2 RBI.  In game 2, the Mustangs also had the offense going, pounding out 15 hits winning 15-2.  Batting leaders were Davidson with a homerun and 5 RBI, Ely with 2 doubles and 4 RBI, Wakefield with 2 RBI, and Kristen Herman (Saskatoon) with 2 RBI.  Melinda Stevenson (Brampton; 7-0) got the win in the circle. 

On Sunday in Game 1 vs York Western won 8-0 in 5 innings.  Davidson picked up 2 triples, 3 RBI, and scored, Tricia MacKay (Embro) recorded a triple, 1 RBI, and scored twice, and Anstett scored twice for the Mustangs.  Stirling (9-0) scattered 7 hits for the win.  In Game 2, York scored 4 runs in the first inning all with two outs but were held to only 2 singles the rest of the way by Stevenson (8-0) enabling Western to come back and win 6-4 .  The Mustangs scored 1 in the first, 3 in the third, 2 in the fifth and held on for their 22nd regular season win of 2012. At the plate, Wakefield contributed a triple and 2 RBI, Reynolds a double and 1 RBI, Murray 2 RBI, while Anstett stole 4 bases and scored twice.

The top 8 regular season finishers (Western, Ottawa, Brock, York, Laurier, Waterloo, Guelph, Queen's)   qualify for the Ontario Championship to be contested Oct 19-21 at Stronach Park in London.  There will be two pools of 4 schools (Pool A = Western, York, Laurier, & Queen's; Pool B = Ottawa, Brock, Waterloo, & Guelph).  Round robin play begins Friday evening at 5:30pm and continues on Saturday beginning at 10:30am.  Single elimination playoffs begin at 11am on Sunday and the Champinship goes at 3pm. 

Western's round robin games include:  Laurier (5:30pm Friday), Queen's (10:30am Saturday), and York (2:30pm Saturday).  Select games will be streamed live at  www.oiwfa.org .

Western will be attempting to bring home their third consecutive Ontario title and their 5th in the past 7 seasons.
