Concluding the home portion of their regular season schedule last weekend with a 54-0 win over Laurier, the Mustangs men’s rugby team took to the road to face McMaster in one of the team’s final two games of the year. In a fast-paced game the Mustangs outdid the Marauders, winning by a 33-25 score.
Western utilized a balanced attack on Saturday with four different players scoring tries. Mike Turnbull recorded the most points for Western with one try and four converts for 13 points. Rory Tomlinson’s two tries was next up on the team leaderboard with 10 points.
On the other side of the ball Andrew Ferguson was virtually a one-man offence, scoring two tries, two converts, and two penalty goals for 20 total points.
Fittingly enough it was Ferguson that opened the game’s scoring early on, however Western’s Courtney Mendez responded quickly scoring his third try of the season to give the Mustangs a two point lead.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs the lead would be brief as senior Trevor Anderson would score a try two minutes later and kick the convert to put McMaster head by five. That would be the last lead of the day for the Marauders as both Tomlinson and Penczak scored tries with Turnbull adding the convert on both to send Western to the locker room with a 19-13 lead.
Western began to take control in the second half, widening their lead shortly after play resumed with a try and convert from Turnbull.
Ferguson would respond for McMaster fighting through the Western defence and eventually scoring his first try of the day to make it 26-18 for the Mustangs. However Eight points was as close as McMaster would come to tying things up, with both Tomlinson and Ferguson picking up their second tries of the day to make it a 33-25 victory for Western.
Western now heads into their final game of the regular season taking on the Royal Military College of Canada next Saturday in Kingston. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
