Winquist nets hat trick as Mustangs best Lancers

Tonight the Western Mustangs were victorious against the Windsor Lancers 4-0, a great feat with six starters out for their club national games. The second string Mustangs began by pushing up into the Lancer half, where they remained for the majority of the first half.

There was ample time when balls went out of bounds before play commenced again. Jenn Spinozzi played well in the center and thanks to her leadership the Lancers didn’t often exceed the midfield.

Ten minutes into the half, Lauren Winquist beat Windsor for possession and dribbled up the left wing. She crossed the ball into the center, but her teammates were facing the opposite way and Courtney Stocks was able to get a touch, but wasn’t able to turn around in time to answer for a goal.

At the 25th minute the stadium was decorated with the weathers trendiest accessory - giant umbrellas. On the field, there was much slippage and multiple player tumbles due to moist turf.

At 33 minutes a yellow card was awarded to the Windsor Lancers. As time passed the Lancers grew increasingly more aggressive and this was advantageous to Western because it resulted in more free kicks in their favor.

Eventually, Western turned the game around completely and finally started playing their game instead of playing in stride with the Lancers.

Lighting Lauren (Winquist) sprinted up and down the left wing, feeding ball after ball into the center. It was only a matter of time until someone would manage to score and at 41 minutes, she took matters into her own hands and scored the first goal of the game.

The first half ended with Western positioned in the lead, 1-0.

Four minutes into the second half Madison Seymour embarked on a breakaway run toward the net, however, the Lancers keeper Kelsey Knetchel was able to make a save.

At 62 minutes Western was awarded a direct free kick against Windsor. Sabrina DeNard took an incredible kick that gracefully sailed over the defense and into the right corner of the net.

At 72 minutes Western’s Lightning Lauren (Winquist) was able to casually pass the ball into the Lancers’ net for the Mustangs' third goal of the game. At 77 minutes Windsor’s keeper was out too far and Lauren Winquist was able to pass another casual ball into the Lancers’ net for a hat trick.

Tomorrow the Mustangs play another home game against the UOIT Ridgebacks at 1pm.
