Weekend Preview: Women's Basketball to play York, Laurentian

The Western Mustangs women’s basketball team is on the road this weekend coming off its season opening weekend at Alumni Hall. At its first regular season contest, the team challenged the extremely competitive Ottawa Gee-Gees and grabbed a quick win in the intense bout shooting only two points past Ottawa to take a 74-72 win. Last year’s All-Star guard Jenny Vaughan played all 40 minutes of the game, contributing three-pointers to Western’s scoreboard and earned a game high of 28 points. Bringing persistence to the second game of the weekend, Vaughan earned another game high of 19 points against fourth place CIS ranked Carleton Ravens, but couldn’t use those points to the benefit of Western, as the team suffered a primary season loss 69-48, making the Mustangs 2012-2013 OUA record 1-1.

This weekend, the Mustangs take to Toronto and Sudbury with vengeance.

York – Friday, Nov 16 @ 6:00pm

The York Lion’s women’s basketball team shows its debut this weekend at the Tait McKenzie Centre for the first time this 2012-2013 regular season with contests on its home court. The Lions met the Mustangs on one account last year when York swung a 76-66 victory over Western, and the Lions look to do the same during the home opening game on Friday night. Coming off two losses, one against the McMaster Marauders and one against the Brock Badgers on the road, the Lions now stand with a season record of 0-2 with 93 points for and 122 points against. Hoping to relive a victory from last year over Western, and not a reflect an outcome of last weekend, the Lions plan to challenge the Mustangs with the lead of Courtney Osborne who is averaging 13 points per game.

Laurentian – Saturday, Nov. 17 @ 6:00pm

The Laurentian Voyageurs started their 2012-2013 season with a contest against the Brock Badgers where the Voyageurs fell short in its mission to victory, sacrificing a whopping 40 points to the Badgers’ 72 point score. Finishing second last in the OUA last season, Laurentian looks to outdo that fate and stepped up its game in a second contest against McMaster. Dribbling past McMaster 76-64, Laurentian grabbed a win making its season record 1-1. The Voyageurs last met the Mustangs early in the 2011-2012 season, making this upcoming contest a reunion show. Laurentian Voyageurs tried to take the win from the Mustangs’ stable, but were unable to manage a victory falling 55-81 at Alumni Hall. At the sound of the whistle, Laurentian will be looking for revenge against opponent Western on home court in Sudbury.

The Western Mustangs women’s basketball team heads out on the road to play the York Lions on Friday, November 16 at 6:00 p.m., where the game will be webcast on SSN Canada, followed by a contest in the north against rivals Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, November 17, also at 6:00 p.m.
