Laurentian picks up ten point victory over Mustangs

Box Score The Western Mustangs men’s basketball team visited the Laurentian Voyageurs tonight in Sudbury in pursuit of the team's first win this season. Western has struggled so far in maintaining consistency throughout the entire 60 minutes; despite a fast paced, highly energized game, the Laurentian Voyageurs took tonight's win with a final score of 75-65.

The game started with a clutch three pointer from George Johnson to put the Mustangs on the board. Great defense from Charlie Drouin and Greg Morrow gave Western the edge they needed to pull ahead in the first few minutes of the game. Effective defense from the Mustangs was not enough to shut down the leading scorers of Laurentian. Persistent shooting from the Voyageurs allowed them to develop a lead towards the end of the first quarter.

The opening quarter ended with the score 17-10 in favour of Laurentian.

In the second quarter, Western's Peter Scholtes began to thrive, finding great opportunities on the offensive end. He worked hard in the post creating space which allowed a number of rebounds. Teammate Jack Daneyko also started out well off the bench, driving to the lane with confidence.

Laurentian followed up and continued to find the open man and finished well executed plays with great offensive shooting. The margin began to increase in the second quarter and Western fought to turn things around. The half ended 36-23 for Laurentian.

The Mustangs went to the locker room hoping to identify changes that could reduce the deficit. The team re-entered the game fully energized, and controlled the pace of play. The frontcourt ran up and down the court trying to create scoring opportunities off of the fast break. Ryan Higgins stepped up his offensive play in the third quarter, finding his touch from beyond the arc. Higgins had 9 points -- all in the third quarter -- and helped bring the Mustangs to within 8 points. The quarter ended with a score of 58-50 in favour of the Voyageurs.

In the start of the fourth and final quarter, both teams struggled to develop an offensive rhythm and could not make shots from the field. Drouin made two key layups sparking hope in the Mustang squad.

Persistent defense from the Mustangs led to forced turnovers and a disruption of the Laurentian offense. Solid shooting from an experienced Laurentian team proved to be too much for Western to handle and the game ended in favour of the home team 75-65. Scholtes finished with an impressive game of 15 points, eight rebounds and one assist.

Western prepares for its next game against the University of Toronto on Friday, October 23rd. U of T is also a relatively young team looking to develop throughout the season. The Varsity Blues will prove to be a very challenging competitor for Western in all aspects of the game.
