Weekend Preview: Women's volleyball set for back-to-back games versus Thunderwolves

After a lengthy weekend road trip to Eastern Ontario, the Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team returns to London this weekend for a pair of games against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Action is underway starting Saturday at 12:00pm.

Western heads into the weekend in sixth place in the OUA with a 4-3 regular season record. Western’s Rebecca Oxland remains among the league leaders in a number of categories, sitting in fourth with 4.34 points per game along with 99 kills, 68 digs, 13.5 blocks.

Lakehead Thunderwolves – Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Finishing last in the 2011-2012 OUA regular season with a record of 1-17 and only two points, the Thunderwolves have already had a more successful campaign in 2012. Although still ranked last in the OUA, Lakehead has earned two wins in nine games, already eclipsing their win total from last season.

Players to watch for the Thunderwolves this year include left side Sarah Reid, captain Brittany Macleod and Jorie Daymond. Daymond leads the OUA with 140 kills, also adding 105 digs, 152 points and an average of 4.36 points per game, Teammate Vanessa Chorkawy, is in fifth in the OUA in points per game with 4.3, just behind Oxland, and second to Daymond with 138 kills.

Lakehead’s two matches came against the Toronto Varsity Blues and Ryerson Rams last weekend. The Thunderwolves faced Toronto on Saturday where they were unable to achieve a win falling 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25) to the fifth place Varsity Blues. Lakehead took on the Rams on Sunday earning their second win of the season, defeating Ryerson in four sets, 3-1 (25-11, 25-15. 22-25, 25-14).

The Mustangs host the Thunderwolves in their stable all weekend, with the first game on Saturday, November 24 at 12:00 p.m., followed by a match on Sunday, November 25 at 1:00 p.m., both games taking place in Alumni Hall.
