Box Score LONDON, Ont.- The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team stepped back onto the court this afternoon to challenge yesterday’s opponent -- Lakehead Thunderwolves -- for a rival match in lieu of yesterday’s hard loss. Lakehead blue and Western purple may be similar colours, but the action on court was not equal today as the Mustangs were marching to a different anthem. The home team took the Thunderwolves in three straight sets 3-0 at Alumni Hall, to bring its OUA regular season record to 5-4.

Set scores were 24-22, 25-18, 25-16.

Head coach Dave Edwards said, “It was a big, big difference from yesterday. We were ready to play today; there was a very good performance from every player on the court, and we controlled the game from start to finish. I am very pleased.”

Leading the Mustangs was captain Rebecca Oxland along with right side Stephanie Kreuter who both earned a game high of 17.5 points. Oxland had 11 kills on 28 attempts and ten digs, while Kreuter gained 13 kills on 26 attempts with 5 digs.

Coming off of an awakening loss yesterday, the Mustangs stepped on the court hoping for a better outcome than the team's last match. An Initial edge went to Lakehead gaining an early lead in the first set, but only before Mustang middle Danielle Marshall made a big block edging her team past the Thunderwolves. White and blue followed on Western’s tail, trailing only for a moment as the Mustangs pushed passed the Thunderwolves to lead 16-15 at technical time out. Western reached set point well before Lakehead, but the Thunderwolves made every effort to catch up before the ‘Stangs claimed the set 24-22.

Lakehead edged Western early in the second set vying for a repeat victory, but the Mustangs trotted past the Thunderwolves to take the lead. Setting a premise, Western dominated the court, producing kills the Thunderwolves couldn’t chew. Reminiscent to the first set, the Mustangs led at technical time out, foreshadowing a lead they would not give up. Seven points above, Western powered past Lakehead 25-18, showing no signs of repeating yesterday’s outcome.

Marshall opened the set with a huge kill, suffocating the Thunderwolves to earn an early lead. Not pleased with the past two sets, Lakehead made an effort to change the momentum and challenge Western, making the set point for point. Kreuter contributed strong smashes, while Oxland sent a serve the Thunderwolves were unable to return, setting Lakehead five points behind.

Libero Katie McLay was fighting to save every point to keep Western’s consistent five-point lead at technical time out. Hosting a strong nine point lead, the Mustangs went on to win 25-16.

Leading the Thunderwolves was Vanessa Chorkawy with 13 kills on 33 attempts, nine digs, and a team high of 13.5 points.
