Box Score LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team had an outstanding evening Friday night at Alumni Hall as they defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3 sets to 1. Waterloo claimed the first set but were unable to claim any more as the Mustangs took the next three sets to claim a 3-1 victory.
Set scores were 20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-17.
After a tough loss to Toronto last weekend, Western head coach Dave Edwards was very pleased with the outcome tonight, “it was what we wanted and we got it, we played Waterloo and they’re a tough team. We made a lot of early errors, in the first game we had 14 errors, but I’m proud of the way we battled that, we got our composure back. We are looking forward to going to Brock tomorrow.”
Captain Rebecca Oxland led the Mustangs with 16 kills on 53 attempts and a game high of 24 points while Suzanna Campbell had 43 assists and six digs helping earn Western the win.
Earning the starting serve, Western stepped on to the court ready to avenge last weekend’s loss. Immediately, Waterloo earned the first point but not easily as Oxland sent some powerful kills over the net. The Mustangs were very composed making the set point for point before Waterloo pulled ahead with a 10-5 lead. The Mustangs caught their opponents off guard as the set continued with some tips making up for points lost to service misses. Waterloo just passed the Mustangs taking the set 25-20.
Middle Danielle Marshall took control of the court right off the get go in the second half, putting the Mustangs in front 3-2 with a powerful kill. Waterloo started climbing making the set once again a point for point affair until eventually taking a 12-8 over Western forcing the Mustangs into a time out. Following the time out the Mustangs tied the game at 14 and eventually took the set 25-21.
Heading onto the court with confidence, Western immediately jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the set. After coming within a few points throughout the set, Waterloo tied things up at 15 points a-piece. Leading by only one point at the technical time out, the Warriors turned the set into another point for point event with competitive rallies. Late in the set Oxland gave a huge kill on set point for the Warriors, delaying a victory for Waterloo, and allowing Western to take command and earn three straight points to win the set 26-24.
With two straight sets under their belt, Western started things off with a 3-2 lead and refused to allow the fourth set to become a point-for-point affair, eventually taking the set 25-17 and giving them a 3-1 victory.
Third year libero Stephanie Kantzos was a huge asset to the team earning 19 digs and making big saves in every set. “We had a slow start but I’m happy with the result of our win. I’m really proud with our serve reception because I thought we passed really well; we just had to push through the trouble at the beginning, but we got the win in the end.”
The Western Mustangs head on the road Saturday to challenge opponent Brock for the second time this season at 1:00 p.m.
