Box Score ST. CATHARINES, Ont.- Coming off a big win yesterday, the Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team travelled to St. Catharines earlier this afternoon in hopes to repeat recent history against the Brock Badgers who they defeated on October 20. The Mustangs proved their power once again and successfully defeated the Badgers, this time in straight sets. This second consecutive victory gives the Mustangs a 3-2 OUA regular season record.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-16, 25-22.
Head coach Dave Edwards was pleased with the outcome and said the team “played with great poise and energy.”
Captain Rebecca Oxland led the mustangs to victory with 12 kills on 32 attempts and a game high of 16.5 points. Oxland maintains a second place standing in the OUA with 75 kills and 95 points recorded to date.
Also standing out on the Mustangs side was Stephanie Kreuter with nine kills, 11 digs and 13 points in three sets, while setter Suzanna Campbell provided 30 assists and six digs as an asset to the team's win. Fourth year veteran middle Danielle Marshall let nothing past with four big blocks.
Lucy McLay led the Badgers with nine kills on 28 attempts and 11 points.
Entering Bob Davis Gymnasium with confidence, the Mustangs decided early on in the game they wanted the victory leading with 11 kills on 26 attempts with only six errors, quickly taking the first set 25-19.
Stepping back onto the court, the Mustangs dominated the second set -- powering a 25.0% kill percentage over the Badgers’ 4.4%. The set finished at 25-16.
The Mustangs stepped onto the court for the last time this weekend with offensive and defensive chemistry that closed the match early. The third set was a closer match as the Mustangs only trumped the Badgers by three points.
The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team is on the road again in two weeks challenging Royal Military College in Kingston on Saturday, November 17 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a game versus Ottawa on Sunday, November 18 in Ottawa at 2:00 p.m.
