Coming off a big 40-3 win over the Waterloo Warriors in their season opener the Western Mustangs Men’s Rugby team headed on the road to take on the Guelph Gryphons for their second contest of the 2012 campaign. In a hard-fought defensive contest the Gryphons picked up their first win over Western since 1998, earning a 12-5 victory.
Neither team was able to find their scoring touch early in the game, and it continued to make it a scoreless draw at the half. Guelph were the first ones to make it on the board, scoring a try and the conversion to make it 7-0. Western’s Eric Selvaggi answered back for the Mustangs, scoring a try to pull within two points, however Guelph responded with a push over try to make it 12-5 for the Gryphons.
With only two minutes left in the game Mike Turnbull put a high kick through the Guelph defence for Conor Trainor to give chase, however the ball was just out of Trainor’s reach, and the final whistle sounded give Guelph the 12-5 victory.
“Tough loss, but our big focus now is on Queen’s for next week,” said Mustangs head coach Steve Thomas.
The Mustangs are back in action next Saturday, taking on the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
