UWO vs Laurier WSoccer

Women's Soccer Monica Rossa

Mustangs suffer first loss of the season

The Women’s Mustangs Soccer team was back home Saturday and unfortunately lost to the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-1.

The first half was a 0-0 draw.

The second half was jam-packed with excitement. The team looked strong and had some great opportunities, specifically, in the eighteen-yard box. There was a spectacular header to Angelika Mihalopulos, which assisted a great attempt by Lauren Winquist. Shortly thereafter, Angelika Mihalopulos took the ball up the left wing only to be fouled by an offside call.

The atmosphere was lively as the crowd anticipated the signature 1-0 finish the girls have been delivering over the past few weeks. “It’s a pretty even game so far, I think UWO had a couple of chances that could have gone in and the two players that have impressed me so far are number five (Sabrina Denard) in the back and twenty-four (Lauren Winquist) in the front” said Jurgen Klaus, father of senior player Chloe Klaus, also, sous chef for last evening's Lasagna Dinner at the Klaus residence.

Laurier forward Emily Brown scored at sixteen minutes into the second half. Shortly thereafter, Mustang goaltender Tori Edgar dove in what appeared to be an incredible save, but Suzanne Boroumand scored for Laurier off of the rebound.

Western carried the ball down the field and the team garnered a corner kick after some fancy footwork by Angelika Mihalopulos, who managed to out the ball off of Laurier. After much fussing about in the box in front of the goalie, the ball tipped off of the goalies hand and into the net for the Mustangs' first goal. The score tightened to 2-1 for Laurier.

Attempt after attempt there were some brilliant moments, most notably when Mustang Cloe Klaus had a near miss off of the crossbar. Sabrina DeNard was awarded a kick close to the end of the game, but the distance was far and the ball was swept away by the wind.

Catch the team at another home game tomorrow afternoon at 1pm when they take on Waterloo.
