Mustangs rebound with a 1-0 win versus Waterloo

Lauren Winquist fights for the ball to give the Mustangs a 1-0 edge over the Waterloo Warriors this afternoon.
Today the Western Mustangs took on the Waterloo Warriors and dominated in a 1-0 win. The game was full of action as hot as the twenty-three degree temperature.

Jaynie Van De Walle received a great ball and carried it down the field to the right corner. Unable to cut in, the ball went out off of the Waterloo defender and resulted in a corner kick for Western. Following, Hayley Slavin crossed a beautiful ball in front of Waterloo’s net, but the Mustangs were unable to get a touch for the finish.

A fumble in the center by Western awarded Waterloo’s Kristina Stojadinovic a breakaway, but keeper Keltie Brigham challenged and caught the ball off a bounce.

Western played against the wind in the first half. Balls in the air were unpredictable, and the players kept the ball under control by passing lower to the ground. Courtney Stocks, Jessica Couto, and Hannah Kennedy were integral in creating opportunities for Western. The Stangs applied good pressure to Waterloo, but they were working much harder than Waterloo who had the wind advantage in the first half. The score was drawn at 0-0 at the end of the first half.

The second half got off to an exciting start. Western garnered a direct kick and Sabrina DeNard hammered a great shot only to be foiled by the keeper. Shortly thereafter, she found herself in a Waterloo sandwich on her second attempt at goal and was unable to finish the play.

Western's endurance in the second half was evident. Hannah Kennedy outran Waterloo’s defense and from the right side she just missed the far left post in what would have been a lovely ground goal. There was a nice ball into the center by Krista Lee, but Waterloo’s keeper remained solid throughout the game proving that it would take some crafty footwork to catch her off guard.

Sabrina DeNard eventually managed to find the net for Western and scored on a direct kick with a clean shot to the left corner. The score looked promising for western at 1-0. Waterloo’s Rebecca Kong tried to breakaway down the field, but was tamed by steady keeper Keltie Brigham.

Western dominated the second portion of the game and kept play in Waterloo’s half. Sabrina DeNard, Krista Lee, and Hannah Kennedy all played a superb game.

Catch the Women’s Mustangs at 6:30pm September 21st in their next home game against York.
