The Mustangs (18-0) continued their winning ways this weekend with sweeps over Guelph (5-7) by scores of 9-0 and 7-0 and University of Toronto (2-12) 8-1 and 15-1.
In game 1 on Saturday vs Guelph, Jenn Wakefield (St Thomas) recorded 2 hits and 1 RBI, AJ Anstett (Cargill) and Shannon Davidison (Whitby) each scored twice. The big blow came in the bottom of the 4th inning when following an intentional walk to Davidson, Tricia MacKay (Embro) hit a grand slam home run breaking the game open. Kara Stirling (5-0; London) picked up the 5 inning run rule win.
In Game 2, the Mustangs scored in every inning to record another 5 inning run rule victory. Offensively, Anstett recorded 1 home run, scored 3 runs, and 4 RBI while Michelle Reynolds (Guelph) picked up a triple and 2 RBI, and Carleigh Monk (Hillsburgh) added a double and scored twice. Stacie Cox (5-0; London) was the winning pitcher (8K).
Against U of T in Game 1 on Sunday, the Mustangs scored 6 runs in the second inning and cruised for another 5 inning run rule victory on Senior Day. Big hits for Western were a 2 run double by Anstett and a 2 run triple by Davidson. Melinda Stevenson (4-0; Brampton) scattered 6 hits and struck out 6 for the win.
In Game 2, Western scored 7 in the first inning. Cox (6-0) not only got the victory in the circle but also had 3 RBI and scored 2 runs. Taylor Murray (Whitby) picked up 3 RBI while Melanie Smith (Kitchener) and Anstett added 2 RBI each.
So far in '12, the defending National Champion Mustangs have scored 170 runs and allowed only 15!
Between games on Sunday Mustang Seniors Leah Margolis (Vancouver), Erica Brown (Hamilton), Tricia MacKay (Embro) and Melinda Stevenson (Brampton) were honoured for their accomplishments on and off the diamond. Each will graduate next May and all plan to continue their educations - Leah (medical school), Erica (physical therapy school), Tricia (nursing school), and Melinda (graduate school).
Next action for the Mustangs is the National Unversity Championships in Regina over Thanksgiving weekend. Entering as the number 1 seed, Western will play Lethbridge, Regina, and Durham in round robin action on Saturday followed by quarter & semi-finals on Sunday. The other pool includes Saskatchewan, Calgary, Humber, and SAIT Polytechnic. The Championship game will be played at 11:30am on Thanksgiving Monday.
