Weekend Preview: Western faces Queen's and RMC at Alumni Hall

The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team returned to the court last weekend for the first time following the winter break and had a successful return, defeating the Windsor Lancers 3-2 in a five set thriller. Currently on a three game winning streak, the Mustangs enter this weekend in hopes of keeping their pattern of success with matches against the third place Queen’s Gaels and eleventh place Royal Military College Paladins.

Currently sitting in fifth place in the OUA with a regular season record of 7-4, Western is ready to shift up to higher placings in the OUA.

Lead by captain Rebecca Oxland with 4.46 points per game, which is good for second place in the OUA, the Mustangs trail into this weekend with high hopes for a win.

Queen’s Gaels- Saturday, January 19 - 12:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall

The Queen’s Gaels travel to London this weekend to meet up with purple and white for the first time in the 2012-2013 OUA regular season. It will be the first time the two teams meet in the new year, and given the close OUA standings, it should be a challenging match for both teams. Currently sitting in third place with a 9-2 regular season record, the Gaels will not be giving any points easily this weekend.

Queen’s had a busy schedule last weekend with both games going in their favour. Last Saturday the Queen’s Gaels challenged the Brock Badgers in a five set thriller, earning their first win of the new year on home court 3-2 (25-27, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-13). On Sunday Queen’s repeated Saturday’s outcome over the Waterloo Warriors, coming out with their second straight 3-2 victory.

The Royal Military College Paladins- Sunday, January 20 - 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall

Coached by Carolyn Welden, the Royal Military College Paladins women’s volleyball team holds eleventh place in the OUA with a 2012-2013 season record of 2-10 with four points, in front of the Windsor Lancers and the Waterloo Warriors.

Last Sunday the Paladins challenged the Brock Badgers and fell short in four close sets 1-3 (17-15, 19-25, 27-25, 20-25). Despite a lower standing in the OUA, the Paladins remain a surprising team that continually puts up a fight. During their last meeting, the Mustangs saw victory over RMC, but not without a challenge posed throughout five sets. The RMC Paladins step onto the Mustangs court this weekend in rival of last meeting’s outcome.
