Box Score LONDON, Ont.— The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team took on the Queen’s Gaels this afternoon in Alumni Hall. Unfortunately, the winds were not in the Mustangs’ favour as they fell 3-0 to the visiting Gaels
The set scores were 25-14, 25-19, 25-21.
“Queen’s was the better team,” head coach Dave Edwards said after this afternoon’s game. “We have no excuse—we didn’t execute some simple things. We had some opportunities, but we couldn’t put the ball away. You win as a team and you lose as a team.
“Queen’s was a sharper team, they were crisp and their outside hitter, Colleen Ogilvie had an outstanding game,” he added.
Leading the Mustangs was captain
Rebecca Oxland with a team high of 9.5 points, while libero
Stephanie Kantzos earned 14 digs.
From the opening rally, Western was fired up and got on the board first. Solid blocking from middle
Candice Scott and kills from left side
Serena Smith kept the set close early. However, soon Queen’s began to pull away as Western struggled to keep pace. Up by seven at the technical time out, the Gaels were not giving up points easily and eventually doubled Western’s count, leading 20-10. The Gaels went on to win the first set 25-14.
The second set began with long rallies with neither team able to string a run of points together. With the set tied, Queen’s managed to pull away by two, but that didn’t last for long, as the Mustangs matched the Gaels’ score once again.
Oxland caught the Queen’s defense off guard with her tips, preventing them from running away with a lead. Although the Mustangs only trailed by two at the technical time out, Queen’s came out firing after the break and took the set 25-19.
Down two sets to none, the Mustangs were eager to come out strong in the third set. Although Western was not giving up any easy points, the Gaels still managed to once again edge the Mustangs by four points. With the set tied at 16-16, the Mustangs maintained pressure, determined to not lose in straight sets. Although the third set stayed close till the end, Western fell just short for the third time losing 25-21.
Leading the Queen’s Gaels was Katie Hagarty with a game high of 13.5 points and 11 kills, while outside hitter Colleen Ogilvie earned 14 digs.
The Mustangs return to Alumni Hall tomorrow to challenge the Royal Military College Paladins at 1:00 p.m.
