Game Preview: Mustangs host Guelph Saturday at Alumni Hall

The Mustangs men’s and women’s basketball teams hit the court for the second time this week, taking on the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall.

Western started off their schedule on Wednesday night, with both teams losing close contests against the Brock Badgers. Look for both Mustangs teams to try and bounce back as they host the Gryphons for the first time this season.

Women’s vs. Guelph – Saturday, January 26 – 1:00 p.m.

Western opened the second half of their season by edging out Guelph on their home court 68-64, and the Gryphons will be looking to do the same thing to the Mustangs at Alumni Hall.

The Mustangs dropped a hard-fought game against the Badgers on Wednesday in a game that saw three Mustangs hit double digits on the scoreboard. Expect a similar approach from Western on Saturday as they attempt to move the ball around and get their second straight win over the Gryphons.

Guelph is led on offence by a pair of young guards in first-year player Erica McFadden and sophomore Kayla Goodhoofd. The duo lead the team with 12.6 and 12.4 points per game respectively while Goodhoofd also ranks third on the team in rebounds, bringing down 4.2 per game.

Men’s vs. Guelph – Saturday, January 26 – 3:00 p.m.

The Mustangs will be gunning for a bit of revenge this weekend and hope to avenge a heart-breaking loss to Guelph from earlier this month when the Mustangs lost 58-57 on a three pointer at the buzzer. Western is coming off of a tough game against Brock that saw the purple and white fall behind at the half before storming back to nearly steal the game in the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs received strong scoring from the bench on Wednesday with rookies Elliott Dooley and Jack Daneyko each recording 13 points in the loss. For the Mustangs to take down the Gryphons on Saturday they’ll need to spread the offence around once again and get similar results from both the starters and those coming off the bench.

Guelph enters this week sitting in fifth place in the OUA West with a 5-9 record. The team is led offensively by the duo of sophomore guard Zach Angus and senior forward Dan McCarthy who are averaging 13.3 and 13.2 points per game respectively. Look for these two to be key to the Gryphons scoring efforts as well as on the boards as the two also lead the team in rebounds per game.
