Game Preview: Mustangs face Lancers Wednesday at Alumni Hall

Women’s vs. Windsor – Wednesday, January 30 at 6:00 p.m.

The women’s side comes into their bout versus the undefeated powerhouse Lancers on a high note after handily beating Guelph 89-60 this past Saturday.

Veteran guard Jenny Vaughan continues to gain ground on the pole position in the OUA scoring-title race, sitting in second place with 20.1 points per game. Vaughan has been greatly assisted by guard Laura Dally and forward Emma Nieuwenhuizen of late, with each averaging double-digit point totals in the past several games.

Coach Brian Cheng knows he will need his team to play their best to hang tight with a program like Windsor. The Lancers’ have two players in the top six in scoring – Jessica Clemencon and Korissa Williams, with 17.7 and 15.5 points per game, respectively – and easily lead the OUA as a team in scoring with 74.7 points per game. Western trails Windsor in team offense but still sit third in the OUA with 67.6 points per game.

With the playoffs fast approaching, Western will look to continue their strong play against some of the OUA’s toughest teams while bracing themselves for the possibility of an intense postseason match-up down the road.

Men's vs. Windsor – Wednesday, January 30 at 8:00 p.m.

While the season has not unfolded as men’s head coach Brad Campbell would have liked, it has still been a season of growth for a very young team with the potential for many years of future success. The Mustangs have had their hearts broken at times this season with many close decisions going in favour of their opponents but their persistence and determination has finally rewarded them with a hard-fought victory over Guelph.

Despite recent struggles, the team is led by exciting players like London’s own Peter Scholtes, Oakville’s Charlie Drouin, and Dundas’ Quinn Henderson and others who are capable of having all-around solid games while flying under the radar. With seven players in their first year of university, coach Campbell will continue to lean on his veterans while his recruits gain more experience at the OUA level.

Windsor comes to Alumni Hall boasting an OUA West-leading 12-3 record. One player for the Mustangs to watch out for is fourth-year 6’8” forward Lien Phillip and his team-leading 14.7 points per game and OUA-leading 10.1 rebounds per game. Consequently, Phillip also leads the OUA in double-double outings. While the Lancers’ team has depth, stopping an outburst from Phillip will be critical in keeping the game within reach for the Mustangs.

For this year’s iteration of the Mustangs, however, success will be judged not only on the final score, but on the continued growth and tenacity of a young Western squad.
