Game Preview: Western takes on Ryerson in season's final home game

The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team returns home this weekend after a weekend on the road where they fell to the McMaster Marauders on Friday in Hamilton, and to the nationally ranked York Lions on Saturday in Toronto. In hopes of raising a win, the Mustangs will step onto the court on Friday to challenge OUA fourth place Ryerson Rams for the first time this 2012-2013 OUA regular season.

The Mustangs currently hold a 2012-2013 regular season record of 8-7, and sit in the upper standings of the OUA in fifth place.

The women’s volleyball team continues to be lead by captain Rebecca Oxland who sits in fourth place in the OUA with 140 kills, 231 point count and a 4.21 point per game average.

Ryerson Rams- Friday, February 1 6:00 p.m.

The Ryerson Rams are travelling to London this weekend to challenge the Western Mustangs for the first time this season. Currently sitting in fourth place in the OUA, the Rams hold a regular season record of 10-4, with 33 games for and 20 against.

Most recently, the Ryerson Rams rallied with the Guelph Gryphons last Saturday where they made their presence ever noticeable as they dominated the Gryphons. Ryerson put up a good fight to top Guelph in three sets (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) at their old home in Toronto, the Kerr Hall Gymnasium.

Head coach Dustin Reid has coached his team to tie personal records within the Rams’ program. Holding 10 wins so far this season, Ryerson hopes to gain a few more in the four regular season games they have left to break their school’s previous record.

Lead by Chelsea Briscoe, with 179 points and a 3.39 point per game average in 53 games played, good for 15th place in the OUA regular season standings, Ryerson hopes to share a victory against the Mustangs this coming weekend.

The Rams head to Alumni Hall to challenge the Western Mustangs for the second time this season. Currently holding sixth place in the OUA with a regular season record of 5-9, the Rams sit just below their neighbours, the Toronto Varsity Blues with 20 games for and 32 against.

Western took charge of Ryerson’s court when they last met the Rams in October, defeating them in straight sets 3-0. Most recently, the Ryerson Rams rallied with the Waterloo Warriors where they fell in three quick sets. The Rams pushed to compete but were unable to joust the Warriors off their path and fell short (19-25, 23-25, 16-25), losing 0-3.

The Rams are led by Robert Wojcik, who has 172 kills, 192 points, and a 4.28 point per game average, making him good for third place in the OUA regular season standings. Ryerson hopes to take charge of the court this weekend in effort to reverse the fates of their last meeting with the Mustangs.
