LONDON, Ont. - A hat trick from
Jaynie Vandewalle propelled the undefeated Western Mustangs women's soccer team to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at Huron Flats Field.
"It's a good result playing at home, and we're really happy with the game," said Mustangs head coach
Martin Painter. "It's a good confidence builder with three games to go."
Vandewalle's three goals were also the first three of the game, scoring at the 30, 45, and 73 minute marks. Mustangs
Krista Lee and
Adrianna Giuffre also added a goal each to further the lead and contribute to the win.
With the win, the CIS No. 4 Mustangs hold an 8-0-5 record in the OUA West Division good for first place in the standings. The Badgers now fall to a record of 2-7-4 on the 2013 season so far.
Â
Saturday's game was the second of the season between the two squads, having met late last month in St. Catharines where the Mustangs claimed a 2-1 victory.
Â
In the opening half the Mustangs applied strong offensive pressure to keep the Badgers in their end of the field. Despite Brock's efforts to move the ball down field, the Mustangs were able to maintain their offensive pressure, allowing Vandewalle to put the Mustangs on the scoreboard in the 30th minute and give Western a 1-0 advantage. The purple and white furthered the lead when Vandewalle racked up her second goal of the game giving the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage going into the break.
In the second half the Mustangs continued to come out strong, pressing the Badger's defence for the majority of the half. In the 73rd minute Vandewalle tallied her third goal of the game, securing the Mustangs lead at 3-0.
Â
The Mustangs however, continued to fire off shots on Badgers goaltender Alexa Jackman, and at the 82nd minute Lee netted the fourth goal of the game and Guiffre scored the fifth and final game of the contest a few minutes later to give Western a 5-0 victory. Â
Â
The Mustangs are back in action Sunday, October 13, as they take to their home turf at Huron Flats Field to face-off against the Laurier Golden Hawks at 1:00 p.m.Â
