LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's soccer team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 4-2 in OUA West women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Huron Flats Field as the Mustangs kept their undefeated season alive.
"It was a mixed performance," said Mustangs head coach
Martin Painter. "Offensively we were very good and defensively we weren't so good but we're happy with the win. We have a couple of weeks to prepare for playoffs, and we are very happy with where we are but we know that we have things to work on."
The CIS No. 4 Mustangs now boast a 9-0-5 record this season to maintain first place in the OUA West while the second place Golden Hawks move to 7-3-3 on the year.
Laurier was first on the board on Sunday with a goal by OUA leading scorer Emily Brown just under the four-minute mark. They didn't keep the lead for long though as
Sarah Deakin netted Western's first goal just one minute later.
Lauren Winquist added Western's second goal ten minutes later to give the Mustangs the lead for the first time in the game. The Mustangs kept the advantage until just under the 34-minute mark when the Golden Hawks added their second goal after a scramble in front of the Western net to tie the game.
The early score of 2-2 was indicative of the speed of play as the game maintained a fast pace throughout both halves, and although the Golden Hawks had multiple scoring opportunities late in the first half, Mustangs goalie
Tori Edgar made several big saves to keep Laurier off the board, keeping the score tied at the break.
As both teams hit the field for the second half, it would be the Mustangs taking the early lead when a two-pronged attack netted the team's third goal. They'd extend that just a minute later as Winquist crossed the ball from deep in the corner to the front of the Laurier net where
Jaynie Vandewalle tipped it in for her fourth goal in two games and to give the Mustangs a two-goal advantage.
There would be no more scoring for the rest of the match as Western counted its ninth win of the season and extending their undefeated streak to 14 games.
The Mustangs are back in action on October 19 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Waterloo to face the Warriors.
