Mustangs defeat Gryphons 2-1 to claim an undefeated regular season

LONDON, Ont. - Mustangs Jaynie Vandewalle and Anna Keller led the women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons Sunday afternoon at the Huron Flats Field. The teams met one other time this season and battled to a 0-0 draw. With the victory, the Mustangs head into playoffs sitting atop the OUA standings, a place they have become very familiar with after an undefeated regular season.

"We had a very strong year, conceding only eight goals in 15 games," said head coach Martin Painter. "We scored a lot of goals and had a lot of contributions from a lot of different players".

The opening half of the contest saw both teams battle for control of the ball. It was the Gryphons though, who got on the scoreboard first as Guelph's Alexandra Harriss netted the first goal of the game from just over the halfway line in the Mustangs end. With the 1-0 advantage, the Gryphons continued to fight to secure their early lead, while the Mustangs fought hard to cut it. The Mustangs' efforts paid off when Vandewalle scored Western's first goal of the game at the 38-minute mark to even out the score at 1-1 before going into the break.

Both teams came out from the break looking to take the advantage, and despite a number of scoring opportunities in both ends of the field, it was the Mustangs who were able to take the upper-hand as Keller headed the second Mustangs goal of the game to put Western up 2-1 in the 55th minute.

Although the Gryphons fought hard to keep the ball in the Mustangs end of the field, the purple and white were able to defend their lead and end their 2013 season undefeated with a 2-1 victory.

"It's been a great regular season and now we have to get ready for the play-offs," Painter added.

The Mustangs will kick off their 2013 playoff season on Sunday, October 27 on home turf at Huron Flat's Field at 12:30 p.m. The opponents have yet to be determined.
