Mustangs Win Fourth Consecutive Ontario Championship

Mustang Captains, AJ Anstett, Tricia MacKay, and Kara Stirling (lt to rt))
St. Catharines, ON. - Western swept all 5 games in the Ontario Championship Tournament to win their 4th consecutive Ontario title on Sunday.  The Championship game was a rematch of the National final played on Thanksgiving in London where the Mustangs claimed their 3rd consecutive Canadian Championship with a 8-3 victory over the Ottawa Gee Gees.  This time the Mustangs defeated the Gee Gees 5-2.

In the Championship game, Mustang Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) broke open a 0-0 stalemate in the home half of the 3rd inning with a 3 run, 235 foot blast over the right field fence.  She also hit a double in the 1st inning.  In the 5th inning, Tricia MacKay (Embro, ON) added some insurance with a 2 run bomb to essentially the same spot in right field.  She also picked up a single in the 3rd.

Senior, Kara Stirling (London, ON) pitched a gem scattering 7 hits, allowing 0 walks, and, recording 4 strikeouts.  This performance was especially remarkable given she had pitched a game and half earlier in the day as well as one on each of Saturday and Friday (all wins).  This was necessary because National final MVP pitcher, Stacie Cox was limited due to injury.  However, Cox did play as the designated player in the Championship game and recorded 2 hits and a walk in 3 plate appearances.  She also scored a run and Michelle Renyolds (Guelph, ON), herself nursing an arm injury, scored in the 5th while pinch running for Cox.  Kristen Herman (Saskatoon, SK) and Melanie Smith (Kitchener, ON) added singles.

Davidson was selected as the game MVP.  Top hitter for the tournament was Tricia MacKay who improved on her 0.625 batting average in the National Tournament (10/16 in 5 games) by hitting a sizzling 0.846 (11/13)!

Western got to the final as a result of a 10-3 semifinal victory over Waterloo, who finished 3rd overall.  Ottawa qualified for the final via a 12-2 semifinal win over Laurier.

In round robin play, the Mustangs defeated Guelph, Windsor, and Queen's by scores of 5-2, 15-0, and 13-6.  Several Mustangs picked up extra base hits in the tournament including: MacKay (3 doubles, 1 triple, & 1 HR), AJ Anstett (Cargill, ON; 3 doubles), Stirling (3 doubles), Davidson (1 double & 1 HR), Smith (2 triples), Dana Lahti (Saskatoon, SK; 2 doubles), Brittany Hicks (Dundas, ON; 1 double), Taylor Murray (Whitby, ON; 1 double), Herman (1 double), and Tara Cress (Brampton, ON; 1 double).
