Mustangs Remain in First Place; Next Up is York (Sat) and Queen's (Sun) for Senior Day

After dropping game 1 of a doubleheader in Waterloo vs Laurier (10-6) by a score of 5-6 in extra innings on Friday the Mustangs (14-2) roared back in game 2 to rule rule the Hawks 15-0 in 3.1 innings and then cruised the rest of the weekend sweeping both Guelph (7-5) by scores of 6-0 and 7-0 on Saturday and U of T (1-13) 11-0 and 9-2 on Sunday. The wins keep the Mustangs in first place.

Against Laurier in game 1, Western committed several untimely errors which turned a 2-1 lead into a 2-4 deficit but scored runs in both the 6th and 7th to knot the game at 4 and force extra innings. The Mustangs then scored one in the top of the first extra but allowed two in the home half half for the loss. Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) and Kara Stirling (London, ON) had 3 hits each, Stacie Cox (London, ON) was 2 for 3 at the plate, and Jenn Wakefield (St Thomas, ON) contributed a double but it wasn't enough on this day. Stirling (4-1) pitched the complete game and took the loss. Rebounding nicely in game 2, Western pounded out 20 hits in 3.1 innings for the 15-0 victory. Kristen Herman (Saskatoon, SK) led the Mustangs with 3 hits (including a triple) and 4 RBI, Cox (5-1) was the winning pitcher and was 3 for 3 at the plate, Btittany Hicks (Dundas, ON) got 2 hits (including a home run) and 3 RBI, Tricia MacKay went 2 for 3 with a triple, while Freshman, Dana Lahti (Saskatoon, SK) picked up 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Davidson had a home run and 2 RBI.

On Saturday in Guelph, Cox (6-1) pitched 4 innings and Stirling 3 for the shutout win in game 1. At the plate, Cox recorded 3 hits and 2 RBI, Julia Palleschi (Markham, ON), Carleigh Monk (Hillsburg, ON), Herman, and Davidson had 2 hits each. In game 2, Stirling (5-1) piitched 4.1 innings and Freshman, Mac Hawkins 1.2 innings for the run rule win. Melanie Smith (Kitchener, ON) had 3 hits, 1 RBI, and scored twice, AJ Anstett (Cargill, ON) 2 hits (including a triple), 2 RBI, and scored twice, and Cox recorded 2 hits and 3 RBI for Western.

In Toronto on Sunday, Stirling (6-1) pitched 3 innings and Hawkins 2 for the 11-0 victory. Anstett had 3 hits (including a double), 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI, MacKay and Stirling added 2 hits each, Freshman Rachelle Washkevich picked up 2 RBI, while Monk, Freshman, Lauren Sovereign (Brinsley, ON), Herman, and Hawkins had 1 RBI each. In game 2, Palleschi, Anstett, and Herman drove in 2 runs each and Sovereign, Washkevich, and Taylor Murray (Whitby, ON) added 1 each. Hawkins (2-0) picked up the 5 inning run rule win.

Next action is Saturday, October 5 vs York (2 & 4pm) at Stronach and on Sunday, October 6 vs Queen's (11am & 1pm) when the Mustang will celebrate Senior Day.
