Western Mustangs Sports

Senior Day 2013

Softball

Mustangs Sweep York & Queen's in Preparation for Nationals (Oct 12-14)

The Mustangs (18-2) swept York (4-10) by scores of 6-0 and 8-0 on Saturday and Queen's (5-11) by scores of 7-0 and 9-0 on Sunday.  The wins coupled with an Ottawa loss vs Guelph on Sunday clinched another first place finish for Western, their 9th consecutive league title.

Three huge contributors to recent Mustang Softball success, Senior Co-captains AJ Anstett (Cargill, ON) and Kara Stirling (London, ON) and Talyor Murray (Whitby, ON) all had memorable days on their last regular season home stand.  All three will graduate in May.  Murray recorded 3 hits (including a triple) and 5 RBI on Sunday.  Stirling (8-1) picked up 5K with only 2BB in a 6 inning rule rule shut out victory vs Queen's.  At the dish, she was 2-4, scoring once, and contributing 1 RBI.  On Saturday, she pitched the 6-0 win vs York recording 7K.  Anstett got 4 hits and scored 3 runs on Sunday and on Saturday blasted a timely grandslam in the 6th inning to break open a close 2-0 game vs York.

Other stars on this final regular season weekend were pitcher Stacie Cox (8-1; London, ON) who also won two games in the cicle and recorded 7 hits, Shannon Davidson (Whitby, ON) with a home run, 8 RBI, and 3 runs scored, Brttany Hicks (Dundas, OH) with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored, and Kristen Herman (Saskatoon, SK) with 4 hits.

The Mustangs now turn their attention to the National Championship and a possible 3-peat right here at Stronach Park, Oct 12-14.  However, it will not be easy because all 8 participating schools have solid teams including perenial college contenders Durham and St Clair as well as Humber who burst onto the scene recently and won the Ontario College Athletic Association Championship in 2012.  National runnerup in 2011, the University of Calgary Dinos boast a 16-1, 2013 season record in the Western Collegiate Softball Association, and the 2012 Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association Silver Medalists, Ottawa sit right behind the Mustangs in second place in 2013 OIWFA play.  2012 OIWFA Bronze meadialists Waterloo and fourth place finsihers Guelph round out an outstanding slate of participants in what promises to be a very competitive tournament.
